MIKA ESPINAL

I am a 23-year-old fashion designer and visual artist based in Toronto.

Fashion is an important part of my life and identity, and has evolved from a method of taking care of myself, to caring for others. In my 8 years of sewing, I’ve seen the excitement people experience when trying on clothing I’ve made for them. This is the feeling I want to create for others and for myself throughout my life.

My goal is to master technical sewing and construction so I can create beautiful, well-fitting, quality garments. I see my own ability to produce garments as a vital part of communicating my artistic vision as a fashion designer.

Growing up in an artistic family has strongly affected my interests. My current artistic practice incorporates a range of skills like watercolour painting, screen printing, and drawing, and in the future, I aim to integrate new means of expression into my art.

I envision creating a team of my own in my future as a fashion designer. This could eventually enable me to go into larger scale production while maintaining focus on sustainability, superior design, and quality of construction. I intend on utilizing the tools and resources available to me to jumpstart a lifelong career of making beautiful, conceptual, quality clothing.
